Sociology of
Work:
I learned a lot in this class and I enjoyed the experience it gave me. In this class we discussed man problem that
can arise in the workplace and how to address them. Also, the class instructed us in many different areas that will enable
us to smoothly merge into a career when we are ready to enter the corporate world. For example, for our final, instead of
an actual exam, we did mock interviews. This consisted of each student showing up at an assigned time to talk with the teacher
and the T. A. in which a series of pre disclosed questions were administered and the students performance was assessed based
on their appearance, posture, which was specified in class, and their ability to “sell themselves” to an inquiring
employer. From the beginning of the class we were instructed to construct a portfolio with items such as, our resume, work
ethic statement, DARS report, evidence of three transferable skills, and two letters of recommendation. All of the activities
done in this class were very important to my future and in giving me a general overview of what I am to be dealing with or
coming up against once I am out in the business world on my own.
Sociology/ Mass Communication:
This particular class didn’t quite sit well with me although what I experienced in the class was beneficial to
me and my future. The class discussed the history of the media industry and its many struggles in becoming what it is today.
The class also forced us to read and discuss the current problems and concerns in the mass communication industry and from
that analyze how society reacts and accepts the ideas and methods being g put on television, radio, internet, magazines, and
books. This was the sociological side of the class. I was interested in both aspects of the class because in my pursuit of
becoming an executive producer, I needed all the information I gathered in this class and based on the fact that the class
already was integrating sociology and communication, which are both my areas of concentration.
Small Group Communication:
This class gave me an interesting experience. Although it was fun and exciting, mainly due to the teacher's
enthusiasm and the large amount of class participation, I felt I walked away with a profound understanding of communicating
within a small group in order to create a presentation. In the beginning we were placed, randomly, into groups that came out
to be very diverse in race, gender, and values and beliefs. In my groups alone there was an array of personalities and backgrounds
which in the end became our strong point when presenting and collaborating in the many projects thrown our way. In the beginning
we had a lot of conflict as our personalities meshed and we began to get to know each other. Once this process was complete
we became, by far, the strongest group in the class. This class was good for my communication skills and it taught me to learn
to listen to other people’s perspective and to consider what they are saying. This will help me with my 401 course when
I am dealing with the tenants in the office building I will me managing. During the monthly meetings I will have with them,
they are supposed to view their ideas on what they want to be done with their building and how they want it to be managed.
Introduction to Human Communication:
This was a
very general class, of course being a level 100 class, and didn’t leave a lasting impact on me. The only affect this
particular class had on me was a peak into something I felt at the time I could become interested in. It was a large lecture
class so there wasn’t much interaction with the teacher or any of the students in the class. At the time I was in the
pre business major so I paid little attention to the deep meaning in the class but now that I look back I did learn how to
be verbal with conscious respect to my non verbal communication. Also, this class left me monitoring other peoples non verbal
communication cues to help me better understand their true feelings about what they are trying to communicate.
Introduction to Sociology:
This was the
class that began my thinking about changing my major to Sociology. The teacher I had was like no other I have ever had. The
class covered many topics, such as, society and how it functions. The types of factors that lead people to make the decisions
they make, for example, clothing, choice of friends, type of car, job, and so on. The class also touched on how a small group
of people, in a powerful position can change the ideas or view points of a large group. This was the part that caught my attention
mainly because I find myself interested in how people are manipulated and control without being conscious of what is going
on. This class was also beneficial to me because I began to look at people and their choices are, somewhat, not their own,
which in turn, allowed me to have more patients with certain people, mainly the ones I work with on a day to day basis.
Communication/ Creativity:
This was another
interesting course. This class was all about expressing yourself in a way that was creative and at the same time have factual
background and accurate research behind everything delivered. This too was a group orientated class, although the reflections
that were to be done at the end of each project gave the course a sense of individualism, because we had to analyze ourselves
and how we preformed based on the different factors within the given situation. There was a certain project we had to complete
which involved the T. A. and the dilemma she had with a loud neighbor. All the groups were to come up with a “creative”
way to fix the problem and a professional, problem solving, panel of judges were to decide who had the more creative, realistic,
and logical solution. This project, yet again, showed me how many different people can view the same thing in a totally different
way than you do and once you embrace that you can integrate your different views to find a suitable solution that would not
have come about if both minds were not together on the problem.
